STILLWATER COUNTY EXTENSION


rapelje roadStillwater County is located in south central Montana.  It is a rural county with an area of 1,793 square miles and a population of 8,391.  Of the nine small towns located in Stillwater County, only the county seat Columbus, with a population of 1,882, is incorporated.  The other towns range in population from approximately 50 to 1,200. 

Stillwater County is comprised of prairie farmland in the north and mountains in the south.  The county's two major rivers are the Yellowstone and the Stillwater.  The county has about 44,000 cattle, 7,000 sheep, 1,000 swine and 62,000 acres of hay.  There are 123,900 irrigated and non-irrigated harvested cropland acres.  Winter wheat is the number one dryland crop.  Irrigated crops produce alfalfa, sugar beets, beans, corn silage and small grains.  The area is well-known for its camping, fishing, hunting and outdoor recreation activities.
